About

Bio

Alan Chin is an artist whose work attempts to navigate the continuous abundance of information through visual language by integrating elements of painting, architecture, installation, and performance.  Often investigating the value we place on objects he explores how objects create meaning within the vocabulary of life.  Chin finds connection by using everyday materials, ranging from found objects, nature, and humanity. Chin see’s art as evidence of behavior and is interested in the process of experimentation. As a result, his work seems to hover in a transitional state of paradox, as if caught between life and death.  Locked in a moment the work becomes a self-perpetuating system, seemingly capable of a goal, transition, and rebirth.  Like a search engine, his work attempts to organize the universe through a fragile, personal system of order with in the seemingly chaotic world by focusing the intersection of what we share, when we live together.

Alan Chin (b. 1987 Berkeley, CA) lives and maintains a studio in Hawthorne, California. He attended Academie Minerva in the Netherlands and earned his BFA in ceramics and painting from California College of the Arts in 2011.  For six years, Chin was studio assistant to the American artist, Raymond Saunders. His work has been shown in cities around the world and at institutions such as Berkeley Art Museum, California College of the Arts, The Kaneko, Richmond Art Center, Sam and Alfreda Maloof Museum, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. In 2017 he was selected to represent the USA at the first International Ecological Sculpture Biennale in Wuhan, China. In 2021 his work made for an anti-hate rally was added to the City of Torrance City Hall permanent collection.
